The short answer

  • Kumon Australia charges a one-off A$100 enrolment fee plus A$160 a month for each subject, GST included.
  • That is A$1,920 a year per subject, or about A$37 a week.
  • Fees are per subject, so a second subject or a second child roughly doubles the tuition.
  • You are paying for in-person teaching at a centre. Online practice is a different kind of help at a very different price.

Kumon offers Mathematics, English, Japanese, Kokugo and Pencil Skills. Tuition is charged per subject, so a child studying both Mathematics and English pays the monthly fee twice. Fees are payable in advance on a calendar month basis, and all prices include GST.

Worth confirming with your centre

Kumon's fee page does not say whether the enrolment fee is charged per child or per subject, and it does not mention fees varying by centre. Ask both questions when you enquire, and treat the figures here as the published starting point.

What it adds up to over a year

Because fees are per subject and per child, the total climbs quickly for families with more than one child. This is the first year at the published fees, with twelve months of tuition and no discounts.

First-year cost at Kumon Australia's published fees
  • 1 child · 1 subjectA$2,020
  • 1 child · 2 subjectsA$3,940 to A$4,040
  • 2 children · 1 subject eachA$4,040
  • 3 children · 1 subject eachA$6,060

Assumes A$100 enrolment per child. A range is shown where a second subject might or might not attract a second enrolment fee.

From the second year the enrolment fee drops away, so one subject for one child settles at A$1,920 a year.

What the fee gets you

Kumon is taught in person. What you are paying for is a place to go, regular contact with an instructor, and someone other than you holding your child to a routine. That is a different thing from software, and it is why the price is so different.

What the fee covers

  • ✓Time at the centre: students are usually there for 30 to 45 minutes per subject, depending on age and the difficulty of the worksheets.
  • ✓A Kumon bag and the Table of Learning Materials, included with enrolment.
  • ✓A structured routine: Kumon suggests 15 to 30 minutes of study each day.
  • ✓No fixed commitment period.

What to weigh

  • !Tuition is per subject and payable in advance each calendar month.
  • !The enrolment fee is not refundable in part or in full unless otherwise agreed.
  • !Minimum age varies from centre to centre.
  • !Kumon describes the programme as most effective as a long-term study programme, so the real cost is usually more than a term.

Ways to spend less on practice

You do not have to choose between paying a centre and doing nothing. A few ways to keep regular practice going for less:

  • Start with one subject. Fees are per subject, so a single subject halves the bill compared with two.
  • Ask your child's school what practice it already provides, before paying for more.
  • Use free printable practice for the gaps. A weekly worksheet on one skill costs nothing but the printing.
  • Look at online programs priced per family rather than per child, which changes the maths for two or more children.

Where PebbleYard fits

PebbleYard is a set of short practice topics for primary-school children, sequenced to the Australian Curriculum v9.0 with an ACARA reference on every topic. A parent chooses what their child works on and in what order, and results are graded on our servers and kept as a record. The price is per family, not per subject or per child.

PebbleYard prices today

  • Solo$12 a month, or $89 a year
  • Family$19 a month, or $149 a year

Read live from our pricing page. See what each plan includes.

What PebbleYard does not do

  • There is no tutor, and nobody in the room.
  • It does not adapt to a child's answers.
  • It is used in a web browser rather than a native app.
  • It does not cover extended writing or oral language.

Who should choose which

These are different kinds of help. Here is how to tell which one fits your family.

Choose Kumon if

  • Your child needs a person in the room, a weekly routine somewhere other than home, and an instructor's judgement about what to do next.
  • You want a child to be held accountable by someone other than you, and you will pay for that.
  • Your child works better away from a screen, on paper, with someone watching.

Choose PebbleYard if

  • You want short practice at home that follows what your child is studying this week, and you are happy to direct it.
  • You have more than one child and want one price rather than a fee per child per subject.
  • You want a record of what each child has actually done, without giving them an email login.
