Science Word Search and Crossword Maker

Eight primary science topics (plants, animals, weather, space, the human body, states of matter, forces and living things) with the words already in the box. Choose a word search or a crossword, edit the list if you like, and print it with an answer page.

The puzzle

Pick a topic and the science words fill in. You can change any of them.

Bigger grids hold longer words and take longer to solve.

The words

8 of 20. One word per line, twelve letters or fewer.

The page

Leave it blank and the sheet prints a line to write on.

Nothing here is sent anywhere unless you choose to send or save it - both are one-off and used for nothing else.

Science has its own vocabulary, and a child who can spell "habitat", "orbit" and "friction" is more likely to read and write about them with confidence. A puzzle is a gentle way to see those words repeatedly without it feeling like a spelling test. This maker has the words for eight common primary topics already filled in, so the work of typing the list has been done for you, and you can still change any word.

Word search or crossword

The word search hides the words in a grid and gives the child a word bank to find. The crossword interlocks the words through shared letters, which is a harder task because the child has to think about spelling rather than just spotting a shape.

Both print with an answer page for the grown-up.

Topics covered

Plants, animals, weather, space, the human body, states of matter, forces and living things. Each list has twelve words and you choose how many to use, from six for a young child up to twelve.

Words are kept to twelve letters or fewer so they fit the grids, which leaves out a few long ones such as photosynthesis. Add your own if you want them and have a bigger grid.

Questions parents ask

Can I use my own science words?+
Yes. Type or paste any list of single words into the box. Each word has to be twelve letters or fewer.
What age is it for?+
Six words in a 10 by 10 grid, across and down only, suits Years 1 to 2. Twelve words with diagonals and backwards suits Years 4 to 6.
Where are the answers?+
On a second page, which prints after the puzzle.
Is anything sent to you?+
No. The puzzle is built in your browser unless you choose Save and finish later.
