A catalogue has to be worth writing for everyone, which means it can only ever contain the subjects everyone has in common. The interesting material is all in the long tail, and the long tail is exactly what a child will read without being asked twice.
Five that work
Birds in your actual garden. The bus and train lines your child rides. Car makes and where they are built. The bones in a hand. The words on a restaurant menu in a language spoken at home. Each one carries reading, vocabulary, spelling and at least one measurable fact per page.
Local beats general. A topic about your street will out-read a topic about the world.
How to keep them small
Four lesson pages, ten questions, a dozen spelling words. If a topic is taking more than an evening to write, it is trying to be a curriculum. Split it and ship the first half.
