Who is in it

Every story needs somebody in it. The people or animals in a story are called the characters. A character can be a girl, a dragon, a robot or a very cross cat.

One character usually matters most. We call that one the main character, and in an adventure story people often call them the hero. The story follows them. We find out what they want and what they are afraid of.

At the beginning of a story you meet the characters. That is what a beginning is for: introducing the characters and showing you where they are.
