Onomatopoeia

Some words sound like the noise they describe. Sizzle sounds like bacon in a pan. Crash sounds like a dropped tray. Buzz, splash, crunch and hiss all do the same trick.

There is a long word for it: onomatopoeia. It is said on-oh-mat-oh-pee-ah, and it is worth learning just to be able to say it.

Not every describing word works this way. Quickly, bright and gentle tell you something, but they do not make a sound. A word is only onomatopoeia if saying it out loud is a bit like hearing the thing itself.
