What the CBCA is

CBCA stands for the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a group of people, most of them volunteers, who spend their year on one idea: that children should have good books and should know about them.

The first Australian Children's Book Week was held in November 1945. Its theme was United Through Books, chosen just after the Second World War had ended.

The council began giving a Book of the Year award the following year, in 1946. In 2026 those awards reach their eightieth year, which is why this Book Week is a birthday as well.
