Writers

Australia has produced children's writers who are read all over the world.

Mem Fox wrote Possum Magic, published in 1983 and still one of the best known Australian picture books. She was a teacher first, and she is known for saying that a picture book is written to be read out loud.

Jackie French wrote Diary of a Wombat. She lives in a valley in New South Wales with actual wombats, which is where the idea came from. She has written more than a hundred books, for children of every age, from picture books up to long novels for teenagers.
